Preparing to Cycle
Cycling has very little negative impact on the body. Your body weight is supported by the bike, so cycling is challenging, but not as daunting as it may seem. The key to any sporting activity whether it is cycling or whatever is to do your basic homework.
Learning how to ride
The most important task for a novice is learning how to ride a bike.
Spend time familiarising yourself with the feel of your bike, gears, cycling kit and saddle. Control when climbing and descending hills. Practise taking your water bottle from its cage, drinking and replacing it while keeping a straight line. Not keeping a straight line at all times is one of the biggest causes of accidents. Never look back. Learn to mend a puncture.
Riding with cleats
Understand how the locking mechanism works before you ride. Before riding, place one foot on the ground. Practice engaging and disengaging from the pedal a number of times till you get used to it.
Practice riding on smooth ground first. Before riding, adjust the retention force of the pedals to your liking. Make sure that mud, dirt, and foreign objects don't build up in the pedal-cleat interface area.
Select the right sized shoes, and be sure to fasten them securely. Do not step on sharp pointed objects or subject your shoes to shock as the soles are made of special material. Do not use your shoes for walking as this will damage the cleats and cause extra unnecessarily wear.
If you have any questions regarding methods of Installation, adjustment, maintenance or operation consult a professional bicycle dealer.
Advice on buying a second hand bicycle.
Here are a few easy things to remember that will help you get a top quality bike and a good deal at the same time. Beware there is a lot of junk out there so buy your second hand bike from a reputable person that you can always come back to if there is a problem. If you are starting off, take a buddy who knows about bikes and get his/her opinion and check out:
1. That the bike is your right size.
2. Make sure that the bike hasn't been thrashed too much. Take a good look at the overall condition of the bike parts and especially the frame.
3. The best place to buy a bike is to check out my website secondhandbicycles.co.za. On this website you will find what you are looking for.
